Gazans Brave Destruction to Survey aftermath of Truce : Analysis

Israel’s military operation has resulted in significant destruction in the northern Gaza region. Numerous buildings, including homes, schools, and hospitals, have been damaged or destroyed due to air raids and tank fire. While some structures remain intact, many are in ruins. Following the ceasefire, residents have been able to assess the damage and search for their missing loved ones. According to a United Nations-led aid consortium, over 234,000 homes have been damaged, with 46,000 completely destroyed, amounting to approximately 60% of the housing stock in Gaza. This widespread destruction significantly hampers the ability to meet basic needs for survival in the affected areas. The conflict has also displaced a large number of people, with around 1.8 million individuals, nearly 80% of Gaza’s population, seeking refuge in the south. However, Israeli troops have prevented people from returning to the northern region during the ceasefire. While the truce has enabled an increase in the delivery of food, water, medicine, and fuel, the volume remains below pre-war levels, despite the escalating humanitarian needs. As a result, residents continue to face challenges in accessing essential resources, such as gas and cooking fuel, even five days after the ceasefire began.
