New Delhi Ex-Envoy Urges Cooperation and Negotiation in Troubled World- Analysis

India’s Former Ambassador to Russia, Venkatesh Varma, discussed the importance of diplomacy and cooperation in achieving multipolarity during an interview with RT. Varma mentioned that many predictions made by the late Evgeny Primakov, the former foreign and prime minister of Russia, are coming true, such as the rise of groups like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. He also emphasized the need for conflict resolution, development, and addressing challenges in technology, food, and energy.

India’s stance on diplomacy was evident in its approach to the conflicts in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war. India abstained from voting against Russia in the UN Security Council and General Assembly over the hostilities in Ukraine, leading to increased trade between New Delhi and Moscow. In the Israel-Hamas conflict, India abstained from a UN General Assembly vote on an immediate humanitarian truce but later voted in favor of a resolution condemning Israeli settlements in Palestine. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the Hamas attack on Israel and called for dialogue and a two-state solution.

India’s balanced voice in ongoing conflicts has garnered attention from the global community, particularly from countries in the Global South. Saudi Arabia’s envoy to India expressed expectations of India’s major role in supporting global peace and stability, with the Arab-Islamic summit in Riyadh seeking to engage major capitals like New Delhi in promoting peace in Gaza.
