Time running out for Ukraine cash : Analysis
Spokesman for the US National Security Council, John Kirby has expressed urgent need for additional funding from the White House to continue supporting Ukraine, indicating that sustenance until year-end would be “really hard”. Kirby made these remarks in a press briefing with Karine Jean-Pierre and stressed the imminent Russian campaign against Ukraine’s critical infrastructure. Further, he asserted that despite months of preparations, additional work is required towards Ukraine’s support, hence Congress’s expedited action for supplemental funding is crucial.
The Biden administration has been attempting to secure a new “national security” funding package for Kiev, Israel, and Taiwan, but has faced resistance from Congress. This package amounts to roughly $106 billion. Another attempt to pass this package is expected soon.
US Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer stated that the delay in approval was due to the Republicans who wanted to tie foreign aid to changes in the US border security policy. Schumer, in a letter to senators insisted on passing the funding bill to ensure military capabilities to confront adversaries. Noting that, Kiev potentially losing the conflict against Russia without further funding, the US has already provided more than $76 billion in military aid and other support to Kiev since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in February 2022.
