A new group of 39 Palestinians have been released from Israeli prisons as part of a deal between the Israeli government and Hamas. The prisoners arrived in al-Bireh in the occupied West Bank to a warm welcome from hundreds of people. As the International Committee of the Red Cross bus carrying the Palestinians arrived, crowds chanted “God is Great” and some young men even stood on the roof of the vehicle. Many in the crowd displayed Hamas flags and shouted pro-Hamas slogans. Palestinians often view prisoners held by Israel, even those involved in attacks, as heroes of the resistance against occupation, and the release of these individuals has been met with celebration and tears of joy. This release comes after Hamas freed 13 Israeli captives. The four-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, brokered by Egypt, the United States, and Qatar, also included the exchange of 50 civilian captives for Palestinian prisoners.
