Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida and a potential future presidential candidate, and Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, engaged in a televised debate that has been seen as a glimpse into the 2028 presidential race. The debate was marked by policy disagreements and personal insults. DeSantis accused Newsom of lying and leading a failing state, while Newsom mocked DeSantis as a bully who is trailing behind Republican presidential contender Donald Trump. Newsom even suggested that DeSantis should drop out of the race and give Nikki Haley a chance to challenge Trump. DeSantis, in return, criticized Newsom as a slick and failing politician. The debate, titled “The Great Red vs Blue State Debate,” was aired on the Fox News Channel and was hosted by Sean Hannity. It took place in Georgia, a crucial swing state, and had no live audience. As the leaders of two of the most populous states, DeSantis and Newsom have spent the past year criticizing each other’s policies and leadership styles from a distance. However, this debate gave them the opportunity to directly challenge one another on a national stage. Throughout the debate, both participants frequently interrupted and talked over each other. DeSantis, who was just re-elected as Florida’s governor in 2022, is striving to build momentum in the 2024 campaign, with Trump currently being the clear frontrunner. Newsom, on the other hand, is a Democratic governor who is term-limited in California and has his sights set on a potential future presidential run, though he opted not to challenge Biden for the Democratic nomination in 2024, following the tradition of other ambitious leaders in his party.
