China minimizes EU trade war risk : Analysis
China has invited European Union (EU) member states to take advantage of its “mega market” in response to the EU’s concerns about a trade imbalance with China. The European Commission had warned that it might impose protectionist measures to protect local industries from Chinese firms. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin stated that China has never sought a trade surplus deliberately and has consistently pushed for international trade openness. Wang also argued that the trade situation between China and the EU is influenced by macroeconomic factors, international trade conditions, and industrial structures. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed concerns about the trade imbalance and stated that the EU has tools to protect its market but prefers negotiated solutions over protectionist policies. The comments come ahead of a new round of talks between EU officials and Chinese leaders, which will focus on trade and conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. Wang warned that new protectionist measures could invite reprisals from Beijing and that strict restrictions on high-tech exports to China while increasing exports to China may not be a reasonable expectation. Chinese President Xi Jinping reportedly urged Germany to help scale back the EU’s trade policies and continue accepting Chinese investments during a call with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Xi emphasized that China-Europe relations are essential for global stability and prosperity.
