Uganda qualifies for first-ever ICC T20 World Cup

Uganda has made history by securing their first-ever qualification for the ICC T20 World Cup. They secured the last available spot from Africa, completing the 20-team lineup for the tournament scheduled to take place in the Caribbean and the United States next year.

The Ugandan team secured their spot by defeating Rwanda in the Africa qualifiers. Notably, they also beat former regional powerhouse Zimbabwe in their first-ever T20 international win over a full-member team.

In the qualifier match against Rwanda, Uganda asked their opponents to bat first and managed to dismiss them for a mere 65 runs. Uganda chased down the target comfortably in 8.1 overs at the Wanderers Cricket Ground in Windhoek, Namibia.

In addition to Uganda, Namibia also qualified from the African region. Namibia has previously participated in the 2021 and 2022 editions of the T20 World Cup.

Eight teams have secured their spots through regional qualifiers. Ireland and Scotland claimed the European slots, Nepal and Oman qualified from Asia, Canada qualified from North America, and Papua New Guinea secured the East Asia-Pacific slot.

The United States will also participate in the tournament as joint hosts with the West Indies. This marks their first-ever major ICC event.

Australia, England, India, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka have qualified based on their top-eight finishes in the previous T20 World Cup. Afghanistan and Bangladesh qualified as the next top teams in the ICC T20 rankings at the end of the last year’s T20 World Cup.

The 2024 T20 World Cup will be played in two phases – a knockout round and a main round. The top two teams from each group will move to the Super Eights phase, where the remaining teams will be split into two groups of four. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals.

The tournament is scheduled to be held from June 4 to 30 at seven venues across the Caribbean and three venues in the United States, including Dallas, Florida, and New York.

The participating teams in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 are Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, England, India, Ireland, Namibia, Nepal, Netherlands, New Zealand, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Uganda, the United States, and the West Indies.
