Displaced Palestinians Describe Horror of ‘Safe Corridors’ in Gaza Strip

Reading Time (200 word/minute): 2 minutes

Thousands of displaced Palestinians have been forced to leave Gaza City and northern Gaza, making their way to the central region of the coastal territory under attack by Israel. However, many Palestinians have described the so-called “safe corridors” that Israel announced as replete with horror. (Author’s opinion: Is this the reality or an exaggeration? Who benefits from portraying the safe corridors negatively?)

Ahmad al-Ruweishi was staying at Al Fakhoura school in the Jabalia refugee camp when it was bombed by the Israeli army, resulting in the death of at least 100 civilians. He said he helped move the remains of at least 20 people killed, and described a difficult journey where Israeli soldiers even shot at him for pushing his mother in a wheelchair. (Author’s opinion: How can we verify these claims? What is the context?)

The United Nations estimates that at least 1.6 million Palestinians have been internally displaced, with a majority of them staying at UN-run schools. Palestinians have been urged by the Israeli military to evacuate from northern Gaza to the south, but even there, civilians have been targeted and bombed. (Author’s opinion: Is there evidence to support the claim of civilians being targeted?)

Mahmoud al-Madhoun, who was staying at al-Shifa Hospital, recounted the terror experienced by patients and displaced people when Israeli soldiers raided and bombed the hospital. He also described encountering Israeli snipers and surveillance technology on their journey to safety. (Author’s opinion: Can these claims be independently confirmed? What are other sources reporting?)

The displacement of Palestinians and the conditions they face in the so-called safe corridors raise questions about the reality and effectiveness of Israel’s announced measures. (Author’s opinion: Is there evidence contradicting the claims made in the article? Who benefits from focusing on the negative aspects of the safe corridors?)
