According to a Eurobarometer survey, EU citizens are concerned about poverty and want the fight against poverty to be a top priority for the European Parliament. The survey found that 73% of respondents expect their standard of living to decrease in the next year, while 47% have already seen their living standards decline due to the pandemic, the Ukraine conflict, and rising inflation. The study also revealed that 37% of respondents struggle to pay their bills sometimes or most of the time.

The countries with the highest percentages of people experiencing or expecting a decline in their living standards are Cyprus, Greece, and France. In Greece, 36% of respondents said they struggle to pay their bills most of the time, while 50% said they struggle from time to time.

On the other hand, the survey also showed that a majority of those polled believe that EU actions have had a positive impact on their daily lives. However, the main disadvantage mentioned by respondents was the lack of influence they have on EU decisions.

The survey results come six months before the European Parliament’s 2024 elections, which will be held in June.
