Food aid for 1.4 million people in Chad to ‘grind to a halt’ soon, WFP says : Analysis: Analysis
The World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that it will be ending food aid to 1.4 million people in Chad, including refugees escaping violence from Sudan’s Darfur region. This decision is due to a shortage of funds. The WFP has already been forced to suspend assistance to internally displaced people and refugees from Nigeria, Central African Republic, and Cameroon, starting from December. Now, these cuts will also affect people in crisis in Chad starting in January. According to the International Organization for Migration, over 540,000 refugees have fled from Sudan to Chad in the last seven months due to the ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The situation in West Darfur has worsened this month, with ethnically driven violence and mass killings prompting even more people to flee. Pierre Honnorat, the WFP’s Chad country director, emphasized the urgency of the situation and the need to continue life-saving operations in Chad. The WFP estimates that $185 million is required to support people in Chad for the next six months. However, UN officials have expressed concerns about the lack of international interest and funding for this crisis. In June, UN aid chief Martin Griffiths stated that Darfur is rapidly becoming a humanitarian calamity and called on the world to not let this situation repeat itself.
