Former Russian PM branded ‘foreign agent’ – Analysis
Former Russian Prime Minister, Mikhail Kasyanov, has been labeled a “foreign agent” by the Russian Justice Ministry. He is the highest-ranking ex-official to receive this designation. The ministry accuses Kasyanov of actively spreading false information and participating in the creation and distribution of materials aimed at tarnishing the Russian government’s reputation. They also highlight his opposition to Russia’s military operation in Ukraine and his involvement with foreign organizations. Kasyanov has been associated with the “Anti-War Committee of Russia,” a group created to discredit Russia’s policies. He has been living abroad since June 2022.
Kasyanov responded to the designation by stating that it was solely due to his anti-war stance. He acknowledged his involvement with the Anti-War Committee and his opposition to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Mikhail Kasyanov served as Russia’s Prime Minister from 2000 to 2004 and has been in opposition to the government since then. He led the liberal-democratic Party of People’s Freedom (PARNAS) from 2015 until its dissolution in May 2023.
