Turkish President Erdogan Criticizes Israeli Prime Minister’s Actions in Gaza

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions in Gaza during a parliamentary group meeting on Wednesday. Erdogan called the military operation in Gaza one of the worst atrocities of the century and accused Netanyahu of making his mark in history as a bloody leader.

Erdogan expressed his frustration with the human rights violations and acts of war in Gaza, as well as the perceived indifference of Western nations. He pledged to hold the Israeli government accountable under international law and moral responsibility. These comments echoed his conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, during which Erdogan called for Israel to be held accountable for violating international law, the law of war, and humanitarian law.

According to Erdogan, the Israeli retaliation against the militant group Hamas resulted in the deaths of more than 1,200 people, mainly civilians, and the hostage-taking of 200 individuals. Erdogan labeled Israel’s actions as a form of genocide, accusing them of cutting off essential supplies and services, effectively turning Gaza into an open-air prison.

In response to Erdogan’s criticisms, Netanyahu referred to Turkey as a supporter of the terrorist state of Hamas. Erdogan argued that Netanyahu’s actions were fueling anti-Semitism and putting the safety of Jews and Israelis at risk.

Recent international pressure led to a four-day humanitarian pause in hostilities in Gaza, which was later extended. As part of the ceasefire, an exchange of prisoners took place, with Hamas releasing hostages in exchange for Palestinians held in Israeli custody.
