Palestinian Lives Remain Insecure Globally : Analysis
Three former students from the Ramallah Friends School in the occupied West Bank were shot and injured in the United States. The students, Hisham Awartani, Kinnan Abdulhamid, and Tahseen Ali Ahmad, were described as bright and talented individuals. The school is the only International Baccalaureate and Quaker school in the region and aims to provide its students with the best possible education. However, living under military occupation means that students often face challenges, such as missing classes due to strikes and experiencing violence in their surroundings. Palestinian children regularly encounter checkpoints and must be aware of their safety at all times. Despite these difficulties, the students persevered and applied to top-tier universities abroad. The author, who taught these students, expressed shock and disbelief at the news of the shooting. They believe that the incident cannot be separated from the ongoing conflict and oppression faced by Palestinians in Gaza, the Jenin refugee camp, and the occupied West Bank. The author highlighted the perception of their students’ language and identity as a threat for white colonizers. The author grappled with whether to discuss the shooting but was inspired by one of the students’ closing statement at a candlelight vigil. The author questioned how they can support their students and ensure their safety as a teacher in Palestine. They also acknowledged that Palestinians face constant fear and uncertainty. Despite their concerns, the author found hope and inspiration from their students and recognized the ongoing risk faced by Palestinians worldwide.
