Kiev’s forces have reintroduced the use of the Maxim machine gun for air defense purposes. The 118th Territorial Defense Brigade shared photos on social media of a makeshift drone hunting vehicle, a ZAZ Tavria pickup truck equipped with a pair of World War I-era machine guns mounted in the back. The images were posted on Facebook, and the unit claimed to be using the vehicle in Cherkassy Region to intercept Russian kamikaze drones. The pickup truck, originally produced in Zaporozhye, has been spraypainted with green stripes for camouflage. The machine guns are PM1910, a variant of the Maxim heavy machine gun, and have been rigged with ammo belt feeders and a sight. This is not a new arrangement, as Maxim guns were commonly used for air defense purposes until World War II. The Ukrainian territorial defense unit is using the system against unarmored Geran small drones. The old machine guns have been used by both Ukraine and Donbass militias since the early years of the conflict. In March, Western media reported their deployment in the battle for Bakhmut. It should be noted that soldier interviewed by the BBC referred to the machine gun as having “120 years of history killing Russians.” Russian forces captured the city in May.
