The Islamabad High Court has ruled that the trial of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan inside a jail is illegal, which is seen as a boost for the country’s main opposition leader. Khan, who has been in jail since August 5 following his conviction for unlawfully selling state gifts, was granted bail but remains locked up in connection with other cases. The high court declared the trial being held inside the jail for security reasons as null and void. The Supreme Court has accepted Khan’s bail application but has not set a hearing date. Khan’s lawyer expects a decision in the next hearing after arguments from both sides. Khan, a former cricketing legend-turned-politician, alleges that the charges against him are part of a conspiracy to keep him out of politics. He claims that the cypher case, as well as other charges, are a ploy by his enemies, including the military, to remove him from power. While the cypher case has been declared null and void, Khan’s lawyer believes that his incarceration will continue until he gets bail from the Supreme Court.
